Cultivating Community Connections: An Edible Artscape

This community edible artscape was created in collaboration with Arts Street youth artists and residents of the Tapiz Apartments, an affordable housing community located directly behind the site. Throughout the design process, the youth and I met with older adults and residents with disabilities who lived at Tapiz to gather input and help shape a space that would feel useful, welcoming, and connected to the people it served.

Together, we designed, planted, and installed an edible landscape that combined food production, public art, pollinator habitat, and ecological education. The central sculptural element functions as habitat for native bees and other pollinators, making the artwork part of the living ecosystem rather than simply a decorative feature.

The youth learned about permaculture, urban agriculture, pollinators, and ecological relationships while participating directly in the design and installation process. The result was a shared landscape that brought together art, habitat, food, and community - creating a place where people could gather, learn, harvest, and see their own input reflected in the finished project.
